PYNK Community

Branding and logo design

PYNK is a social collective of professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, performers, families, and friends, of which I am honored to be a part. Starting based in NYC and now spread across the country and globe, Pynkers gather in celebration of community, connection, and expression around the city, a special valley in Vermont, and group experiences worldwide.

Near the end of 2014, PYNK leadership put out a call to the community for a logo design. I created a handful of logo concepts myself, gathered everyone’s contributions, and organized a transparent voting process for all community members to participate in logo selection. I was delighted when my logo design (that I felt most strongly about myself!) also resonated with most of the community—the ‘Eternal PYNK Heart’.

My fascination with ancient symbolism such as the eternal knot found in Tibetan Buddhism and the many endless/mystic knots found in Celtic art served as my inspiration for this design. PYNK is an interconnected community of givers, and love powers us all—the ‘Eternal PYNK Heart’ is formed by a single, endless thread with no beginning or end. Interwoven in a symmetrical dance, it symbolizes the auspicious interconnection between givers and receivers, the karmic connection linking all causes and effects, the endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, the eternal continuum of the mind, and the harmonious interaction of dualities always in play.

Since its inception, PYNK continues to incorporate the Eternal PYNK Heart logo in everything we do, in artwork, jewelry, etc. This project also brought to fruition a key question I ask myself when designing a logo—can it artistically symbolize something important to someone to the extent they’d permanently tattoo themself with it? This project was particularly special in that three PYNKers took that very plunge :D
